In the face of the many monuments, portraits and writings that have stylised Beethoven as a hero and mythical loner, it is easy to forget that the native of Bonn and Viennese by adoption was, during his lifetime, part of a network that included models, equals and pupils, as well as rivals. Kammerata Luxembourg’s programme therefore juxtaposes Beethoven’s chamber music with that of his contemporaries, opening up some surprising perspectives. Joseph Haydn, with whom Beethoven initially wanted to study in Vienna, is represented, as is Ferdinand Ries, who was a pupil of Beethoven. We will also hear a work by Anton Eberl, whose symphony in E flat major was played at the same concert as Beethoven’s Eroica and received better reviews. Interesting connections across Europe emerge; for example, both Eberl and Ries worked in Russia, and the Russian novelist Tolstoy erected a literary monument to Beethoven’s Kreutzer Sonata. The concert itself will also have a literary dimension, with Luxembourg actress Brigitte Urhausen reading between the various works texts by German authors who have attempted to document and situate Beethoven’s life and work in words.<\/p>\n
