While Max Reger (1873-1916) is today associated mainly with Johann Sebastian Bach – not least because of his impressive organ works – his writing of counterpoint reveals many affinities with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart’s String Quintet KV 406 is an adaptation of his Serenade for Winds KV 388, arranged for string quintet and reduced to five instruments. Reger, for his part, achieves a remarkable contrapuntal density in his String Trio Op. 141b, despite an even smaller ensemble – a constraint partly reminiscent of Mozart’s when he adapted his Serenade for Strings. Both composers demonstrate an exceptional ability to create a rich and complex world of sound with a reduced number of players: Mozart remains anchored in classical harmony, while Reger explores a more chromatic and sophisticated palette. Reger’s Clarinet Quintet Op. 146, completed shortly before his untimely death in 1915, is reminiscent of Mozart’s 1789 Quintet in A major, both in formation and structure. In this late work, Reger avoids the pathetic tonalities of his earlier compositions, adopting a calmer, more introverted approach and a subtle, transparent sound.

Max Reger | String Trio in D minor, op. 141b | violin, viola, cello
WA Mozart | String Quintet No. 2 KV 406/516b | 2 violins, 2 violas, cello
Max Reger | Clarinet Quintet op. 146 | clarinet, string quartet

Max Mausen, clarinet
Sandrine Cantoreggi, violin
Pascal Monlong, violin
Susanne Martens, viola
Javier Martín de la Torre, viola
Gustav Rivinius, cello

Information / Booking
www.cape.lu
tickets@cape.lu
+352 2681 2681
Tickets : 26 € | < 26 ans : 13 € | Kulturpass bienvenu

In co-production with

From Mozart to Reger - Kammerata

<meta property="og:description" content="In this concert, Kammerata Luxembourg presents a fascinating dialogue between two musical geniuses.
