Gustav Mahler, often celebrated as one of the “fathers of modernity,” was admired by composers such as Arnold Schoenberg and his pupils, notably Anton Webern. Apart from a single movement for piano quartet, Mahler left no chamber music works. However, a sketch for a second movement later served as the basis for a composition by Alfred Schnittke.

In 1918, Schoenberg founded the “Society for Private Musical Performances” in Vienna, with the aim of presenting contemporary music in chamber versions to an informed audience. It was in this context that he arranged Mahler’s Songs of a Wayfarer (Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen) for small ensemble – performed in Ettelbruck by the renowned Brazilian baritone Michel de Souza. Webern’s arrangement of Schoenberg’s First Chamber Symphony, reduced to five instruments instead of the original fifteen, also originated within this society.

Music & Wine, a new series proposed by the CAPE, combines chamber music with wine tasting by winemaker Georges Schiltz (fru.lu) – a sensory experience where sound and taste merge in perfect harmony.
