The blaze of romanticism – Farrenc & Schubert

Sound experience by the light of candles

Concert of the MusicDays Vianden 2026 festival

In the warm glow of candlelight, this programme brings together two major works of the Romantic chamber music repertoire, offering complementary perspectives on the piano quintet in the nineteenth century.

Composed in 1839, Louise Farrenc’s Piano Quintet in A minor, Op. 30 opens the concert with music of remarkable structural clarity and expressive depth. Already a celebrated pianist and composer in her own lifetime, Farrenc creates a richly textured dialogue for the same ensemble composition as Schubert’s famous Trout Quintet. With a finely balanced interplay between piano and strings, each instrument plays an essential role in shaping a musical conversation that is both vibrant and compelling. The work captivates through its inner energy, its wealth of musical ideas and the strength of its expressive voice.

In contrast, Franz Schubert’s Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667, universally known as the Trout Quintet, offers a brighter and more lyrical vision of the genre. Written in 1819 and inspired by Schubert’s celebrated song Die Forelle (The Trout), the work is distinguished by its flowing melodies, transparent textures and unusual instrumentation, which includes a double bass. Here, Schubert creates a world of warmth, elegance and freshness, where colours and motifs move freely between the instruments in a spirit of effortless invention.

Presented together, these two masterpieces trace a fascinating journey between intensity and lightness, discipline and spontaneity. They reveal the remarkable richness of the piano quintet as one of the most expressive and versatile forms of Romantic chamber music.
