Czech Chamber Music

Antonín Dvořák, Josef Suk, and Bohuslav Martinů not only share the fact that they are all originally from Bohemia and skilled violinists or violists, but they also have a teacher-student relationship among themselves. Suk received composition lessons from Dvořák, while Martinů received violin lessons from Suk. Kammerata presents a particularly meaningful chamber music work from each of the three composers. Dvořák’s Piano Quintet, Op. 81, from the late 1880s, once again incorporates elements of Eastern European folk music. Suk’s Piano Quartet, bearing the opus number 1, serves as a statement to the musical world about what can be expected from this composer in the future. Finally, Martinů’s Madrigal Sonata from 1942 refers back to an older vocal genre in musical history, in which human feelings and passions were sung, creating a compact and dense chamber music piece that impresses with its lightness and elegance.
