DIE GESCHICHTE VOM SOLDATEN
Jun
2021
A travelling soldier makes a pact with the devil and gives him his violin in exchange. However, it is not the instrument itself that interests the devil, but what it stands for: liveliness, feeling, heart and soul. The pact means only apparent happiness for the soldier, and so the one who dances with the devil ends up going to hell himself. The fairground, its atmosphere, its smells and sounds, were the inspiration for the music and narrative style of the music theatre piece, which Stravinsky conceived in collaboration with the Swiss author Charles Ferdinand Ramuz for a small travelling stage during the First World War.
In a new production, the Luxembourg theatre company Kopla bunz, together with the Kammerata Luxembourg and in co-production with the CAPE, dedicates itself to this “read, played and danced” stage play, which is particularly distinguished by the incredibly multi-layered rhythmisation of words, music and plot as well as Stravinsky’s ingenious composition.
