Colours of the sound – Jeux de timbres

45th “Festival de Musique” at Château de Bourglinster

Through a series of contrasting musical worlds, this programme explores the many dimensions of instrumental colour. From the elegance of Classical dialogue to the distilled language of contemporary music, each work highlights a unique palette of timbres and expressive possibilities.

In his Oboe Quartet in F major, K. 370, Mozart places the oboe at the centre of a piece that is both lyrical and brilliantly virtuosic. Supported by a finely balanced string trio, the solo instrument engages in an elegant musical conversation that perfectly illustrates Mozart’s gift for clarity, charm and interplay between voices.

With Ecloghe, Op. 206 by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, the atmosphere shifts towards a poetic and pastoral landscape. The unusual combination of guitar, flute and cor anglais creates delicate and evocative sound colours inspired by an idealised vision of nature. Reflecting the composer’s lyrical sensibility, the work unfolds with grace, refinement and a touch of nostalgia.

The programme then turns to György Kurtág’s 12 Microludes for String Quartet, a collection of concentrated musical miniatures that open a window onto a fragmented yet intensely expressive sound world. Each brief movement explores a single musical idea with remarkable economy of means. Together, they form a work of extraordinary emotional depth, where silence and gesture are as significant as sound itself.

The concert concludes with Luigi Boccherini’s Guitar Quintet No. 4 in D major, G. 448, a work full of charm, elegance and vitality. Here, the guitar—an instrument particularly close to the composer’s heart—blends naturally with the string quartet, bringing warmth and brightness to the ensemble. Characteristic of the galant style, the quintet delights with its graceful melodies, sparkling textures and dance-like spirit.
