From Mozart to Reger

In this concert, the Kammerata Luxembourg presents a dialogue between two musical geniuses. Although today we tend to make connections between Max Reger (1873-1916) and Johann Sebastian Bach, not least because of the impact of Reger’s organ works, there are also many links between Reger’s music and that of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Reger’s three-movement Serenade in G major Op. 141a, composed in 1915, and Mozart’s four-movement String Quintet in C minor KV 406, dating from 1787, are directly related, as the original version of Mozart’s work, written five years earlier, is also a serenade, but for wind instruments. Reger’s Clarinet Quintet Op. 146 (1915), completed shortly before his untimely death, echoes in instrumentation and structure Mozart’s Quintet in A major KV 581, composed in 1789.
