In So fahr ich hin and Selig sind die Toten, Heinrich Schütz offers two sacred works of profound simplicity, in which reflections on death give way to a message of Christian hope, expressed through a musical language of remarkable emotional power. With his Funeral Sentences, Thomas Morley presents music of dignified restraint, written for the Anglican rite and shaped by the solemn elegance of the English royal tradition. Henry Purcell’s Funeral Music for Queen Mary brings a striking sense of grandeur to this ceremonial world, combining funeral sentences, marches and canzonas into a musical statement that is at once solemn, deeply moving and profoundly human.
