‘…The best is in any case a quartet for piano with clarinet. It is said to be by Rabl, a pupil of Nawratil. I know very little about this young man and his works. Of course, now I’m keeping an eye on him and his piece…’, Johannes Brahms said of Walter Rabl’s Opus 1. This piano quartet won a competition organised by the Wiener Tonkünstlerverein and, stylistically influenced by Brahms, shows off Rabl’s talent. Later, he became a conductor, lieder accompanist and singing teacher, including general musical director in Magdeburg, and conducted works by Strauss, Schreker and Korngold.
The string trios Blau, des Falters Flügel and Hinter den Blitzen, Rot by Claude Lenners are part of his Zen-Archiv. These works reflect colours that determine the tonality of the music. Blue represents calm sonorities, while red explores extreme worlds of sound.
Mozart’s piano quartets are considered early examples. He was looking for a dialogue between the piano and the strings. In the piano quartet in E flat major, the influence of his opera Le Nozze di Figaro is evident, particularly in the opera buffa-style finale.
